BUCKLE UP: A TEST DRIVE MEME

Been feeling as if you'd sort of, kind of, maybe like to consider a new character at Poly? Haven't had the chance to figure out whether they work for you in the setting or in general?

Just start a thread for them here with:

character name | series

- in the title, and tag around! Alternatively, just comment to someone else's thread, either doing your own thing, assuming characters just met in the City, or maybe working off one of the following premises:

i. ...it's raining people! The character whom you're tagging missed the memo about perfect Fountain landings and ended up falling on your character instead.

OR

ii. ...ah, a lovely evening at a City shop or bar, when you've just realized you don't have the currency to pay your tab and you have to beg or steal it off someone else!

OR

iii. ...your characters are running up an endlessly high hill from a herd of rabid pandas.

Naturally, the meme is more than open to people who aren't currently at Poly, so pimp this to poor souls you're hoping to enable, it's the perfect time to lure'im in ♥

Oh. [ Now that she's looking more closely, there are differences. ] My apologies.

[ Dropping into the briefest curtsy. ] Miss Theresa Gray. Nice to meet you, Mr Brewster.

No problem. I guess I have a twin or something.

[Oookay, period wear and bowing. Charley's at a loss.] Uh... you too, Theres--um, Miss Gray. Just Charley's cool.

That is not so uncommon, here. At times, people appear who look almost identical to someone already here. It is quite strange.

In that case, Charley, please call me Tessa.

So this twin thing happens a lot around here? It's like soap opera land.

Tessa, sure. Hey.

I would not say that it happens a lot, but it is known to happen. [ She has, at this point, figured out what a soap opera is, at least. ]

That's so weird. [He fidgets and rakes a hand through his hair.] So. Are you from around here?

Oh, no. Most people are not, truly. I have been here for nine months now, but I am from New York in 1878, originally. Or London, I should perhaps say.

1878? Wow, that's--hey, you look great for your age. [That was supposed to be a joke of some kind and it just turned into lame. Charley has to wonder how he managed to get a girlfriend.]

[ Smoothing down her skirts so as not to stare at him blankly. ] I am only sixteen.

[He'll stare at her blankly to make up for it.] Oh, wow. So there's time-travel here, too? [Now he feels stupid.] Okay, I'm an idiot. I'm seriously sorry.

Of a sort? I am not quite certain, but there are people here from different times and different worlds. [ inclining her head. ] It is no problem.

[He scrunches his face up in confusion and runs a hand through his hair again.] Okay. Okay, that's... okay. Any idea who this all happens?

No, I do not understand it at all. I think that it must be magic, or perhaps science which I do not understand.

So weird. Magic? [He laughs quietly.] That's no weirder than vampires, I guess. Must take some getting used to.

Do you have vampires in your world as well, then?

Uh... yeah. Long story, but my neighbor was a vampire. The seriously evil kind, you know, that don't have feelings or sparkle or whatever.

The vampires in my world have feelings. [ pause. ] What happened with your neighbor?

Really? How's that work? I mean, do they still eat people?

Well... [He continues to fidget.] I had to kill him to save my girlfriend. And maybe the world.

There is an Accord that they should not do it to those unwilling, but not all stick to it, certainly. Their feelings are— different, but they certainly have feelings.

[ Oh. ] That could not have been easy. I am sorry.

So they basically sign a contract promising not to eat anyone? [shrugs] Whatever works... or mostly works.

It sucked, but that's not your problem.

In essence, yes. The Shadowhunters enforce it.

No, it is not. Still, I am sorry.

Shadowhunters, huh? That's a friendly name. [It's not.]

Some of them are very nice people, truly.
