Hell, he distanced himself precisely because he was getting too involved. While she's emotionally drained by the Mako mess, he's at the stage where his own fweewings, Pai-related and otherwise, are unpredictable, and his mind isn't in the brightest place. To oversimplify, he knows a good thing when he sees it -- and BK201 is not allowed to keep good things in his lifetime ;3;
Also -- s-sob the only way she could disappoint him is if she ever became too much like him ;; He likes to believe she's strong enough at her core to not absorb all his filth (even if he knows the longer he stays around her, the more rubbing off is inevitable :\)
