Quick ones first! Lacus's first impression of Karl is that he's definitely off in some way (the disdain for newcomers reactions, not a lack of empathy but a lack of caring) but her policy on crazy is to tolerate it until it becomes intolerable for some reason. Treating someone who has trouble connecting with others like a pariah doesn't help anything, in her view, and she has a policy of not making judgment until she either has to or understands things to her satisfaction.

Zel thinks Karl is a typical dickhead. Nothing special, in his mind, about the guy who gets his jollies teasing freaks.

Zel would probably find Hei somewhat interesting if he wasn't determined not to get into drama with people in the City at least until Lina shows up. (Or if he were interested in Yin, which he sort of isn't since he finds her creepy -- not just the blank stare thing, but losing touch of his human side mentally/emotionally is a great fear of his and she reminds him of that.) Anyone who is businesslike and logical and has special abilities generally gets Zel's attention, but in this case he's fully prepared to cut his losses and never bother again (sob). Hei was very correct in his assessments of Zel in terms of reacting with instant defensiveness to anyone who even almost treats him suspiciously, presuming it has to do with his appearance because that's been his life for seven years, Lina and his few friends aside. Hei's initial hostility was recognized as protectiveness eventually, but there's only so much leeway Zel's going to give someone if he's feeling cornered in whatever way. It's not impossible to find a way past it, though Zelgadis is begrudging about lowering his defenses at the best of times, which this clearly isn't. Fortunately Zel is way more likely to withdraw than fight it out, but if he's pushed to it he will. (And sorry Hei my love, you can't win this one. Though it might be an interesting bout.)

Karl confuses the living hell out of Saya. That might be more significant if everything didn't confuse the hell out of her, but Karl does have a particular knack for it. Saya being an amnesiac presents its challenges in terms of relationships, but she has something of an easier time with people who don't claim to know her from before the City. Karl specifically attributes qualities to her that she doesn't want or entirely understand and you can imagine how troubling it is to be told "no, you're supposed to be this way" when she doesn't have the feelings or experience that commiserate with that statement. (Not that Karl is correct in what he's saying if she did have her memories, but she has no way to know that.) Karl makes her not want her memories back, both because he insists she's a monster, which the flashes of Vietnam she's had combined with the curse that made her selfish and Diva-like seem to confirm, and also because she doesn't want to hate Karl like he seems to imply she will once she remembers. Despite her general wariness of Karl she's also seen what she thinks is protectiveness and maybe some form of caring, in his way. When she considers what Karl said about Chiropterans saying they're sorry with their claws, in her head it follows that someone like Karl would show caring by being a possessive, teasing jerk. She's projecting but she's nowhere near emotionally self-aware enough to get that. Yes he injured Charlie to manipulate Saya into doing what he wanted, but he also seems so hurt whenever Saya spends time with Setsuna or brushes Karl off. All this leads Saya to wonder what the real deal is. Her pheromone-driven instinct to make babies with Diva's Chevaliers isn't helping much either. All that said, Saya's being just as selfish and manipulative in her innocent, ignorant way. Karl can't seem to say no to her and she's using that because she hates being alone. If we want to get Freudian about it, she's got no ego right now -- no way to center herself between her fleeting destructive instincts and her equally fleeting self-sacrificing martyrdom. She just reacts to the moment, and combined with hypersensitivty and generally being yanked at from all emotional angles makes her a tantrum-prone two year old but instead of screaming and stomping, she indulges anyone who provides her some sense of belonging, no matter how superficial or bizarre. Karl is one of them, ain't he lucky, and as long as he continues the push-pull he's got going on with Saya she probably won't stop unless she either gets her memories back or Karl does something horrible.
