Oh, Pavel. Between the science, the stargazing, the space travel and general nerdiness, you're like a Could Have Been in Hei's life. There's a lot of qualities in him that remind Hei of the dreamy little aspirations he had at 11, before, well, his homeworld went to shit. Pavel is freaky smart and has an inquiring mind, but he's also extremely well-meaning and loyal to his friends -- which are qualities Hei is aware could've been cultivated to a T in his own nature... if he wasn't a knife-wielding assassin beholden to an underground syndicate. (As it is, those qualities are present. Just. Grievously underdeveloped. And painstakingly concealed. Like a sixth toe. Or something :| ) At the same time, Hei sees glimpses of other people from his homeworld in Pavel. Idk if you're familiar with all of the DtB canon, but Chekov is like a curious mix between Nick Hillman and Kenji Sakurai -- brilliant and amiable but at the same time, very young and impressionable. (Characterization-wise, I try to play Hei/Li with Pavel the way he interacted with both dudes U////U) Noooot surprisingly, Hei's relationships with Nick and Kenji ended on rather ... complicated notes, so Hei makes it a point to tamp down whatever bro-vibes he might feel for Pavel. From the viewpoint of a Contractor (something Hei has spent his life pretending to be -- so it's tricky to stop now) the boy would make a useful asset if kept under control. But that's a frustratingly hard concept to adhere to when Pavel keeps extending so much good faith and friendliness Hei's way, despite being aware that he's a killer.

I think, like with Korra, there's a lot of room for positive growth in Hei via his cr with Chekov. While Hei finds him as naive and clueless as any kid, and wants to shake him sometimes for being so trusting -- trust is, in itself, a huge deal for Hei, because there's so little of it in his profession. That creates a dichotomy in that Hei wants Pavel to wise up, but at the same time, wouldn't wish his mindset and bitterness on anyone else, and would privately regret it if Pavel ended up as jaded and cruel as he is. The clash between honesty and duplicity is also a funny one: Hei is all about evasions and doublespeak, and Pavel is refreshingly straightforward. While Hei doesn't necessarily like that (he holds the firm belief that lies make the world go round), it's interesting for him to observe someone with such a disparate outlook on life. Hei prioritizes deception and keeping an upper-hand, but Pavel's nature often draws him to be honest too -- or at least as honest as Hei is capable of being. Of course, whether Pavel realizes that or not, I'm not sure ^^

I also thiiink -- Hei has cataloged some thoughts on Jinora at this point -- in that he finds her to be a very smart and intuitive little girl, who is also ultimately just a little girl. Not to disparage her -- it's a relief, because most of the kids he knows are, well, killers :|
