Kes | Star Trek: Voyager
[1 – arrival; woods]
[Kes is obviously surprised when she suddenly finds herself in the middle of a forest instead of in sickbay, the medical tricorder she has just been using replaced by an entirely different device. Another one of those holodeck events that everyone is so fond of? She can't quite hold back a sigh for having been whisked away from her research work, but doesn't want to be a complete party pooper either. Is she supposed to make her way through the thick foliage?
She pokes the strange communication device first, her tone playfully chiding once she gets an audio channel running. Maybe this will give her a few hints on how to proceed to properly play along.]
Neelix? [Her first suspect, closely followed by the second.] Tom?
[And after several moments of frustrating radio silence, this time a little concerned.]
Hello?
[2 – several days in; medical facilities]
[It seems only logical that Kes, as a fully capable medical assistant, eventually finds her way into the local hospital to see if her help is needed anywhere.
If you're part of the staff, you'll have an eager Ocampa following you around, ready to learn and get things done. You're welcome.
If you arrive as a patient you might have to endure a few unpleasant side effects of her technological adjustment period. What are those ancient needles and why is it so hard to draw sufficient blood with them anyway? Better bring some patience for getting poked repeatedly. She means well, at least.]
[3 – long-term residency; fountain]
[Looks like it's a nice sunny day outside and someone's enjoying her lunch by the fountain. Or rather in the fountain. Upon her arrival Kes has quickly spotted others idly strolling through the shallow parts to cool off and doesn't hesitate for too long before mimicking the idea. So off with those shoes and into the water - not without a tiny little bit of giddy, childish splashing of course. It's summer, go have some fun!]
2!
Wherever the hell it is. ]
Whole place is a damn maze ...
[ Muttering under his breath, he does his very best not to look like a patient on the run. As long as no one saw him leave his room, he should be golden. ]

If memory serves her correctly, said friend is supposedly even part of the extended, trusted Starfleet family she has yet to meet in its entirety, which makes Kes's decision whether to catch up or not a rather easy one. Soon she falls into step with him, her hands comfortably clasped behind her back as she tries not to look too amused for the sake of professionalism.
But she just has to ask.]
Did you get transferred?
[After all, he somehow doesn't look like someone who really means to head straight into Urology.]
no subject
Oh. Hi, Urology. ]
Uh, yes! And I have no idea where the exit is, I'm all done for the day. Could you point me, please?
no subject
Of course. Follow me, please.
[Kes points to an identical corridor and confidently leads the way - which might or might not make them walk in a circle and get them right back to where they started. Enough time for a little more verbal prodding to satisfy some of her curiosity at least, as if she’s not being obvious enough already with all the unsubtle glancing his way.]
I take it you’re a friend of Doctor McCoy?
no subject
Nope. Never heard of him! Does he work here? [ His new guide is lovely enough to provide a distraction from the mental imagery of Bones howling his vengeance over Jim being gone. ] More importantly, do you? Miss —?
no subject
[Goddamnit, Jim. Guess who’s going to hear about this if she doesn’t herd you right back into your Doc’s waiting arms? That’s right. Watch out, pretty lady betrayal is imminent.]
Ah– Kes! Just Kes. [Angelic smile, devious thoughts.] I do, actually. Or try to, if help is needed. Ca–[Hold on.] Kathryn suggested I get a little hands on experience with the equipment in this period.

In any case, he doesn't quite mind. He's met Kes through the network and can tell that she's got a good head on her shoulders, so now he's showing her around the hospital, showing her the ropes when it comes to deal with twenty first century tech. ]
...It ain't difficult once you get the hang of it, but you'll need to remember not poke the patient to hard with those needles. They can make a grown man double over in pain six ways to Sunday.

But right now she’s keen on finding her footing with his help and closely observes the way he handles instruments that are still a little foreign to her. From what she gathered, 21st century medicine revolved a lot around jabbing, prodding and tearing at body tissue with sharp metal equipment.]
Or push right through… [Frowning.] It seems like such delicate work for what we casually do with hypos. Without even really looking, too. [And after turning her head to stare at a tray of surgical instruments for a moment.] It all does.
one!
Kes? Is that you?
no subject
… Captain? Yes! [A beat, then–] What’s going on? I seem to be– [She’s taking another look around, just to make sure that she really didn’t miss any clues in her surroundings before tentatively voicing her concern.] Captain, is the holodeck malfunctioning?
no subject
We're not on the holodeck. [ though she'd be lying if she hadn't walked around for those first few weeks half convinced that she was, looking for access ports and occasionally asking the computer to end program or provide an exit. ] We're trapped in a city situated at the focal point of a temporal anomaly.
no subject
… what do I do? [She tries to sound calm and composed despite the slight quiver in her voice, especially now that the forest around her suddenly doesn’t seem as safe anymore.] How can I find you? [First things first, she decides in a very Starfleet way, panic and questioning can come later.]
no subject
No, stay where you are; I'll find you. I've gotten pretty good at navigating this city. [ she's already out the door to do just that. ] In the mean time, I need you to pocket your combadge. Don't let anyone know that you have any connections to Starfleet. I'll explain more later.
3!
The fountain seems to be making friends with you the right way.
no subject
Is there a wrong way? [She asks, amused.]
no subject
Try getting dropped in there on your first day.
[ that actually did happen to him. ]
How are you settling in?
